How To Be Merry Yet “Responsible” During The Holiday Season

When you think of Christmas, you think of awesome year-end parties, mouthwatering Christmas dinners, and alcohol – lots and lots of alcohol. People from far and wide come together just to celebrate this season of love, joy, and forgiveness; they especially free time from their busy schedules just to pay tribute to friendship and family ties. People, family members especially, who live far from their kin due to work or other priorities get a solid excuse to return home and feel the warmth of their families again.

Christmas is the season that brings people together, indeed.

Aside from the Christmas highlights mentioned above, what else do you think of when you hear that the holidays are just right around the corner? Presents, of course! There’s also the argument about whether Santa is real or not. We have Christmas trees, merry lights, mistletoes, milk and cookies, wreaths and garlands, and so much more. Plus, let’s not forget the hot cocoa our moms used to let us drink before tucking us into bed; telling us Santa will never come if we leave any on our cups.

Ooh, the great parent trap.

Before you know it, you’re fast asleep dreaming about Santa’s sleigh passing by your window. Then, comes morning. As you roll your eyes with your clenched hands, you try to understand what you’re feeling. It’s that peculiar feeling you have in the morning of the 25th – the feeling that you can already smell Christmas. Feeling slightly annoyed by the fact that you weren’t able to stay up until Santa arrived but still excited to find out what sort of presents lay on the other side of the room, you rush to where the Christmas tree is.

Wowzers! You are met by the lovely view of towering presents.

Should you open them? By all means, yes. Should you scatter your trash around? Goodness gracious, please no. Christmas waste is already notorious as it is.

You must’ve imagined this story to end well. Well, sorry to break it to you but that’s not going to happen – just like how Christmas never ends well year after year. Well, at least for the environment. Every year we open up presents like it’s nothing, cut down Christmas trees thinking it’s okay because of tradition. But you know what? Mother Nature is taking the blow for all these customs. We throw garbage like we don’t care, allow food to spoil as if hunger is non-existent, and kill plant life as if they’re already dead. And according to websites like Serenata, things are not looking good.

There are many ways we can celebrate Christmas. And there are even more ways to make it fun for the whole family without sacrificing the environment in exchange. Every year, we accumulate an alarming amount of waste during the holiday season and it’s about time we stop. Let’s rethink our ways and push for a greener Christmas.

Let’s all be merry yet responsible.…
