We were lucky enough to have Professor Muhammad Yunus visitng Bahrain in September.  This was organised under the patronage of His Highness Shaikh Mohammed Bin Mubarek Al Khalifa with the support of many organisations including the Family Bank, Tamkeen,EDB and the Ministry of Social Development.  He was here to spread the message of the potential of social businesses to change the nature of the business world for the better through the focus on the triple bottom line of people, profit and environment.  He can here with colleagues of his from the Grameen Creative Lab who stayed for the week and ran a number of workshops to identify social issues that could be solved with this approach.

It was very interesting and I attended the opening ceremony where Professor Yunus explained about Grameen Bank and the impact on society of lending small amounts of  money to people in order to help them to help themselves.  The Grameen story is inspiring and was created by him when he was a University Professor of Economics in Bangladesh.  He was trying to establish credit for village women to set up very small businesses and was told that poor people were not credit worthy.   When he looked into this he conculded that mainstream banks were not, on the whole, people worthy.  And do the experiment was born.  It turns out the poor really are a better credit risk than anyone else - loans are 98% repaid.

The workshops were really great and there were so many really good ideas that I hope that there is support to follow on from this.  Family Bank are the micro financing institution here in Bahrian and support small businesses with small loans and training in how to run their business.  I will keep you posted of developments.
